Dr Makis received his MD degree in 1995 from the University of Ioannina Greece, where he also obtained his Ph.D (Cytokines and acute phase proteins in sickle cell disease). He was trained in paediatrics at the University Hospital of Ioannina, Greece. He was specialized in pediatric haematology at the “Aghia Sophia” Children’s Hospital, Athens, Greece and at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, London, UK.
Dr Makis has served as a consultant at the University Hospital of Ioannina, Greece (2005-2008), as a Lecturer in Paediatrics/Paediatric Haematology at the University of Ioannina, Greece (2008-2012), as an Assistant Professor (2012-2018) and since July 2018 holds a post of Associate Professor at the same University. During these years he has a combining role as a general paediatrician with special responsibility for pediatric haematological diseases.
His areas of research interest are in haemoglobinopathies, pediatric myelodysplastic syndromes, immune cytopenias and host defense during infections.
