Arnaud Tarantola spent his childhood in Africa and Asia. He trained as a medical doctor in Paris, France and worked for several years in the study and prevention of occupational infections in French and African hospitals. He joined the InVS's international department in 2003, with a focus on early warning systems incl. in the Balkans, Africa and Latin America and contributing to France’s epidemic intelligence system.
From February 2011 to August 2016, Arnaud Tarantola was Head of the Epidemiology and Public Health Department at the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The unit is a recognized center for field/clinical epidemiology and research in Asia and provides expertise to national authorities. Arnaud Tarantola was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institut Pasteur International Network's Defeat Dengue program and of WHO's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) Working Group on rabies vaccines and rabies immunoglobulins.
From September 1st, 2016 to August 30, 2019, Arnaud Tarantola headed the Epidemiology unit of the Institut Pasteur in Nouméa, New Caledonia. His mandate was to implement research in and outside of the clinical setting relevant to New Caledonians, focusing on infectious diseases but also microbiome, genomics and host-pathogens response.
From Sept. 2nd, 2019 to Dec. 31st, 2020, A. Tarantola was a Medical Epidemiologist and Researcher at the Lyssavirus Epidemiology and Neuropathology unit and WHO Collaborating Centre for Research on Rabies, Institut Pasteur, Paris, France.
Starting Jan. 2021, Arnaud Tarantola is Head of Santé Publique France's Regional epidemiology unit for Paris and neighbouring Départements.
A. Tarantola received a MSc in epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2003, a PhD in Epidemiology in September 2018 and a HDR (habilitation to direct research) in 2019.
