Born in 1902 in the village of Wolowa in the Carpathian Mountains of Austrian Galicia, Gross's journey as a sculptor began against a backdrop of tumultuous times. The early 20th century was marked by upheaval, with World War I shaping the course of Gross's life in profound ways.

Relocating to Kolomyia in 1911, Gross and his family found themselves caught in the throes of war when Russian forces invaded Austria-Hungary. Fleeing as refugees, they returned to Kolomyia in 1915, only to face further turmoil as new regimes sought to expel Jews and foreigners from Hungary. Despite the challenges, Gross's passion for art remained unwavering.

In 1921, Gross embarked on a new chapter in New York City, a melting pot of creativity and opportunity. Here, he honed his craft at the Educational Alliance Art School and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, studying under esteemed sculptors like Elie Nadelman and Robert Laurent. It wasn't long before Gross began showcasing his work in exhibitions across the city, captivating audiences with his innovative approach to sculpture.

The 1930s marked a pivotal period in Gross's career as he joined government-sponsored art projects like the Public Works of Art Project and the Works Progress Administration. Through these initiatives, he created sculptures for public spaces, earning acclaim for his ability to infuse everyday scenes with a sense of beauty and dignity.

As the decades unfolded, Gross continued to evolve as an artist, incorporating bronze sculptures alongside his wood and stone pieces. His works were characterized by their emotive power and masterful craftsmanship, earning him retrospective exhibitions at prestigious institutions like the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Jewish Museum in New York City.

In 1991, Chaim Gross passed away, leaving behind a rich legacy of artistic innovation and inspiration. Today, his sculptures continue to captivate audiences around the world, reminding us of the enduring power of art to transcend time and space.
