Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan

Prof. Dr. Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan was the recipient of the Section Prize for the Best Engineering Research during Presentations at the House of Common (British Parliament) in 2006. He also received the SPIE Educational Scholarship in Optical Science and Engineering in 2004, and the Best Paper for Photonic Category during an international conference in 2003. He specializes in glass-based integrated optical devices for use in telecommunication and sensing applications. He received his PhD from the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton in 2007.

In August 2008, Dr Rafiq was voted Best Academic Staff, Faculty of Engineering. His Flat Fibre patent was the winner of the Gold Award, The Best for Physical Sciences and Engineering, and The Best of the Best (Top Prize) during University of Malaya Research, Invention and Innovation Expo 2009 (UM EKSPO 2009). In 2010, Dr. Rafiq received the Best Lecturer (Faculty of Engineering) and Excellence in Services (2009) awards. Dr. Rafiq also received an award for Best in Teaching during University of Malaya’s Excellence Awards 2011. In 2012, he was voted Department of Electrical Engineering’s Most Favourite Lecturer in conjunction with the annual IR Nite event. He also received the University of Malaya Excellence Awards 2012 for the Best Lecturer for Faculty Engineering, and the Best Dean.

In 2013, Dr. Rafiq was promoted to the post of Full Professor, making him one of the youngest Professors in UM. He was then appointed as the University of Malaya’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, in charge of Development. He is currently the youngest DVC in Malaysia. Dr. Rafiq also picked the Excellence in Services for 2012 award and was joint recipient of the Best Lecturer award for the Department of Electrical Engineering, voted by the Faculty’s postgraduates. Recently, he picked up University of Malaya’s Best Administrator (Dean) award for a second consecutive year.

Dr. Rafiq has published more than 100 journal and conference papers on optics and engineering education. His PhD work on Flat Fibre produced an international patent. His Photonics Research Group group currently runs the only optical fibre fabrication tower in a South East Asian university. His research work on corrosion sensing appeared in the March 2013 issue of a reputable international technical magazine called Optics and Photonics News.

Apart from research and teaching, Dr. Rafiq is also an active member of his Faculty, holding a number of administrative posts. He was Head of Department of Electrical Engineering. He also deputy-chaired two Technical Postgraduate Symposiums, and chaired the Faculty of Engineering’s Sports and Recreational club. He established the Junior Lecturer Forum, an informal platform for young staff members to discuss matters concerning career development. Dr Rafiq was the Acting Dean and Deputy Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Engineering. He is also University of Malaya's Senate member.
