Giampaolo Perna was born in Hartford (Connecticut, USA) in 1964 from an Italian father and a Japanese mother. He took his degree in Medicine and Surgery at the State University of Milan, obtaining later a PhD and becoming Psychiatrist.
From 1998 to June 2009 he worked at the San Raffaele del Monte Tabor Foundation in Milan at the Anxiety Disorders Clinical and Research Unit where from 2000 he held the position of Vice Chief. From September 2009, he is the scientific Director and Chief of the Department of Neuropsychiatry at San Benedetto Menni Hospital - Hermanas Hospitalarias in Albese con Cassano (Como Lake) and at the Outpatients Facility in Milan.
He held several academic appointments and currently he is Voluntary Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences alla Leonard M.Miller School of Medicine dell'Università di Miami (USA), Director of the International Master in Affective Neurosciences of the Universities of Maastricht (The Netherlands) and Florence, Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Maastricht University (The Netherlands) and Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Psychology, State University of L'Aquila.
He is the founder and director of the web site www.anxiety.it and he has been included in “2001 Marquis Who’s Who in the World”. From more than a decade he is member of the “New York Academy of Sciences”. He has been the Medical Scientific Director of the Artic Expedition OLTRE (www.oltre.mobi).
He is one of the most quoted international researcher in the field of Anxiety and Emotional Disorders having being the author of 85 articles in peer reviewed international journals and of more than 100 publications in other scientific journals. He wrote as co-author several chapters of scientific books and have been the co-editor with Prof. Laura Bellodi of the book “The Panic Respiration Connection” (MDM Medical Media, 1998). In 2005 he has been the co-author of the book "Psicopatologia Funzionale (Functional Psychopathology)” (Masson Publisher).
In 2004 he published is first book “Le Emozioni della Mente. Biologia del Cervello Emotivo (Emotions of the Mind. Biology of Emotional Brain)” (StPauls Publishers), translated also in Spanish and Polish). In 2007, together with the scientific journalist Giulio Divo, he published “Psicofitness. Una nuova scienza per il benessere della mente (Psychofitness. A New Science of Mental Well Being)” (Sperling & Kupfer Publishers), in 2008 "La Formula della Intelligenza (The Formula of Intelligence)” (StPauls Publishers), in 2009 "Ansia" (Anxiety) (Piemme Publisher) and "Fobie" (Phobias) (Piemme publisher).
