Johannes Wienand is professor of ancient history in Braunschweig, Germany. He has a keen interest in political culture, civil war, and religion, and he has published widely on Greek democracy, the Roman empire, and late antiquity. Wienand has studied ancient history and philosophy in Tübingen, Vienna, and Konstanz, and earned his PhD in ancient history from U Konstanz (2010). The PhD dissertation has received three academic awards, including the prestigious Bruno Snell Award (Mommsen Society). Prior to his appointment as full professor in 2018, Wienand held positions as assistant professor at U Düsseldorf (2011–2018), and as research associate at U Heidelberg (2009–2011) and U Konstanz (2006–2009). He was visiting scholar in Berlin (HU Berlin, Dpt. of History), Cambridge (Faculty of Classics, U Cambridge), Frankfurt (Leibniz project 'Polyphony of late-antique Christianity', U Frankfurt), Munich (Historisches Kolleg), and Pittsburgh PA (U Pittsburgh, Dpt. of Philosophy). He is the author of a book on triumphal representation and civil war in the period of Constantine the Great, and has authored a book on the Athenian public funeral.
