Dr Stylianou has worked in the field of clinical nephrology as a consultant Nephrologist, in the Nephrology Department of Heraklion University Hospital (2005 up to now) as well as in the Nephrology Departments of Queen Margaret Hospital, Fife and New Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (2004-2005). He is responsible for kidney transplant and general nephrology patients, training of medical students and junior doctors and performs electron microscopy for research purposes. His department runs a research program with emphasis on Lupus Nephritis, Amyloidosis, Diabetic Nephropathy, LCAT deficiency and Genetic Diseases of the kidney. His current research aims to understanding the genetic basis of familial and chronic kidney diseases of unknown etiology. He has published over 50 papers in international journals since 2003 (citations>700; h=16), as well as given a large number of invited talks. He has organized many conferences in Greece and chaired several sessions in national or international congresses and acts as a reviewer for several international nephrology journals. He has participated in several polycentric studies funded by pharmaceutical companies. He is a member of the International Society of Nephrology, ERA-EDTA and the Hellenic Society of Nephrology (Member of the Educational and Scientific committee from 2006 to 2015).
