Andrea Marchitelli (2008)  OJS and OCS : upgrading journals, conferences and scholarly communication to Open Access   European science editing 34: 1. 7-8
Abstract: Open-access (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and mostly free of copyright and licensing restrictions. Besides the need of publishing e-journals on the World-Wide Web to achieve more impact and visibility effects, the editorial workflow needs to be managed through some automation. OJS (Open Journal Systems) is the most used tool for the creation of ejournals. Conference papers and presentations which often disappear without any form of publishing can also increase their visibility. Open Conference Systems (OCS) developed by the PKP is an open source Web publishing tool that creates a complete Web presence for a scholarly conference.

Abstract: The Integrated Library Sistems (ILS, known as Library Management Systems LMS, too) are software composed by different modules corresponding to the different library management needs. In the continuous technological evolution, especially for Web technologies, libraries must be able to supply groundbreaking services around their peculiar functions. For this reason, the choice of the management system must be careful and supported by a specialist and technically skilled partner as CILEA, with over 30 years of experience in the field.

Abstract: In this article are compared traditional OPAC systems, enriched OPAC, social OPAC and social cataloguing systems.the aim is to underline new theoretical trends and to offer a taxonomic outline of such tools, according to the interaction level granted to users and to the chance to manage user's generated contents in the point of view of the application of web 2.0 tendecies to libraries, in the library 2.0. At the end, a brief review of softwares, both open source and not, that seem promising for this future application.

Fabio Valenziano, Andrea Marchitelli (2007)  Il progetto "Biblioteche Nelle Scuole"   Bollettino del CILEA 104. 55-57
Abstract: The "Biblioteche Nelle Scuole" (libraries in schools) project, promoted by MPI, started in May 2004 and is now already almost completed. It has the aim of improving the access to information in school libraries, by developing competences in information retrieval of the participants. The project involves 800 Italian schools which belong to about 120 networks of school libraries. In such a complicated organizational environment, CILEA received the task of teaching school librarians, managing trouble-ticketing systems, designing and managing the Virtual Reference Desk (VRD) and the MetaOPAC of the libraries and the archive of the digital material of the schools taking part to the project.

Abstract: During the last decade there has been a proliferation in the exchange of electronic material over the net, a phenomenon that has included schools, by an ever common use of electronic mail and the web. Many schools have a website, more or less open and collaborative, but there is the lack of a structure that can allow an aimed and coherent recovery of the material scattered in the net. The new technologies of open archives OAI have provided the opportunity to improve the availability and the visibility on the net of what schools produce, therefore supporting collaboration by the exchange and re-use of materials. The BiblioScuole repository allows today to experiment with new technologies and to obtain an advantage for the whole schools community, therefore outlining a now role for school librarians. Keywords: Biblioteche scolastiche, Digital repositories, Open Access.

Susanna Dal Porto, Andrea Marchitelli (2006)  Functionality and flexibility of traditional classification schemes applied to a Content Management System (CMS) : facets, DDC, JITA   Knowledge Organization 33: 1. 35-44
Abstract: Paper presented at the 2nd ISKO Italy-UniMIB meeting, Milan, June 9 2006: http://www.iskoi.org/doc/milano06.htm Different classification schemes may be used for web indexing. The authors analyze three weblogs (Biblioatipici, Letture and Andrea MarchitelliÂ’s blog) to demonstrate that different contents may be classified using the appropriate scheme. Biblioatipici is a weblog about temporary workers in libraries and Italian documentation centres, indexed with a faceted scheme, home made by authors. Letture, a diary about reading and books, is indexed by DDC; finally, Andrea MarchitelliÂ’s blog, a weblog about digital libraries and open access, is indexed by JITA, the scheme used for indexing e-prints in some different open archives. The three applications are presented starting from the most complex scheme (i.e. the faceted one) to the simple but least functional (JITA), passing through a traditional bibliographic classification scheme, the Dewey Decimal Classification. The analysis demonstrates that different web contents can efficiently be classified with different schemes. In particular, with the facets one (Biblioatipici) the indexer is able to generate the needed classes in the indexing phase. Moreover with a small number of facets and foci one can obtain an exponential number of classes. Finally, one of the advantages for the user is that the faceted scheme allows multiple accesses on the basis of different information requirements, in addition to being coherent and intuitive. DDC scheme can be more suitable than the first web pages or blogs performing a sort of digital library. In this case in fact the DDC scheme constitutes a consolidated classification standard, widespread in a huge quantity of libraries and the use of a different scheme might get confusion. JITA scheme, finally, can find a huge applicability in web pages (or blogs) in LIS field showing several advantages: itÂ’s very simple and essentialy pragmatic, intuitive and coherent. ItÂ’s a conservative scheme because structurally closed, in fact it does not allow the classifier to insert new LCSÂ’s categories. If, from a certain point of view, this is a disadvantage, vice versa this feature is really useful because get a complete matching between classes of all the web pages implemented with it.

Antonella De Robbio, Andrea Marchitelli (2005)  E-prints for Library and Information Science (E-LIS) : Un modello di archivio per biblioteche digitali aperte   Biblioteche oggi 23: 10. 40-53
Abstract: The evolving academic discourse surrounding the concept of Open Access (OA) provided the underlying motivation for the establishment of E-LIS Eprints for Library and Information Science. Built in 2003, E-LIS is an international open access archive related to librarianship, information science and technology, and related disciplines. It uses the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) protocol. To date E-LIS is the biggest repository in library and information science and after just three years contains over 3000 papers. E-LIS is the first international e-server in this area, is part of the RCLIS (Research in Computing, Library and Information Science) project and is organised, managed and maintained by an international team of librarians working on a voluntary basis. The library and information world is highly integrated with the areas of computing science and technology, biliometric an citational analysis and it was felt that the LIS discipline should set an example to other communities by providing a state-of-the-art model for the OA movement and digital libraries, particularly in relation to the open archive model, within which E-LIS is a disciplinary repository. This paper describes the main characteristics (technical and organizational) of the archive and its configuration and customization, and discusses its policies, aims and mission. Its main focus, however, is on the E-LIS organizational model and on the strategic issues correlated with Open Access (OA). It also delineates some of the challenges and opportunities consequent on a global vision for the Library and Information Science (LIS) field which envisages papers coming from all over the world and which gives E-LIS the impetus and motivation to stimulate participation in the venture and to further develop international research activities. The extension of the OA concept to LIS works and the dissemination of material within the LIS community will contribute to the development of an international LIS network, so E-LIS can be regarded as a tool for the dissemination of the OA philosophy. These are reasons of the success of E-LIS as organizational model well established inside a digital library framework OAI compliant.

Abstract: This book appears useful and well written, in particular for who is new to the cataloguing of remote electronic resources. In the general organization of the volume, the lacking of an analytical index - which would have simplified very much the reference - is a burden. In this type of work, there is no glossary (brief and schematic, with the most useful definitions) too.
