Mia Abelson

abelsonmia@gmail.com
Mia Abelson is an American oil painter from New York. Mia started painting when she was still a child. She attended the New York University and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts. Her artistic training was essentially self-taught.

After a few beginnings in which she approached surrealism and expressionism, Mia arrived at an absolutely personal style that made her one of the most outstanding figures of abstract expressionism in New York. Her artworks are part of the current called 'the color field'.

Mia's works, usually large and grouped in series, present very little compositional variation. Her artworks basically consist of rectangles of various colors that follow one another in parallel from top to bottom, with slightly irregular edges in the areas of tonal separation.

Mia Abelson's intention was always to apprehend the absolute through a contemplative and sensitizing approach. Her color palette, which is well-known for being very colorful, was darkening over the years.

With the already established abstract expressionism, Mia Abelson initiated the personal abstraction that would define her painting ever since.

Mia Abelson's huge paintings show wide rectangular color fields with indefinite boundaries between them. They are blurred colors that float suspended on the canvas, stimulating quite interesting mystical sensations.
