Engineering – Reinforced Concrete Structures” and Earthquake Structural Engineering
at the Faculty of Engineering (POTENZA).

Reinforced Concrete Structures”, at the Faculty of Engineering (MATERA).
- a.y. '05-'06… now: as Assistant Professor, course of “Basic Principles and Structural
Systems for the Architecture”, at the Faculty of Engineering (POTENZA).
Other teaching activities
- Invited lectures and conferences for specialization and short courses on Structural
Engineering for engineers, architects and technical public operators.
- Scientific Coordinator of about 6 courses on the Seismic Design and new Italian seismic
code for the Professional chambers of Engineers of Potenza and Matera, between 2005
and 2006.
Scientific Activities
The research activities are related to Structural and Earthquake Engineering. They are
based both on theoretical and numerical elaborations and on experimental tests carried
out at the Laboratory of the University of Basilicata.
The main research topics are:
June 2007 Curriculum – Michelangelo LATERZA page 2/5
1) Conventional reinforced concrete structures: seismic behavior, design, modeling and
calculation, material characteristics, techniques and technologies for the seismic
upgrading;
2) Seismic protection of buildings and other constructions using advanced techniques for
seismic isolation and energy dissipation: design criteria, devices, experimental testing,
aspects related to code;
3) strengthening techniques for structures with innovative advanced materials (e.g. FRP)
4) Vulnerability analysis of structures and infrastructures in seismic zones;
5) Confinement of Reinforced Concrete members.
Related to his scientific activities M. Laterza was or is:
- Scientific and administrative Associate Coordinator, of the POP project “Industrial
Dynamic Laboratory of Basilicata” in 1999-2001, supervisor and designer of the new
laboratory and facilities equipped to perform Pseudodynamic tests on full scale specimens
and structures.
- Associate Coordinator of an in-site experimental campaign, performed on a real base
isolated apartment building in Rapolla (south of Italy, 2000). Several dropout tests at
initial displacements up to 17 cm allowed to obtain in-site information on the true
dynamic response of the isolation system (building and isolators). The tests carried out
allow a comparison between the free vibration responses of a building, isolated by using
a 28 HDRB isolation system only, or an HDRB-Friction Sliders Hybrid one.
- Scientific Coordinator of several experimental tests of three-dimensional R/C columns
and beam-column joints of existing structures retrofitted with steel and/or FRP wrapping,
carried out at the Laboratory of University of Basilicata.
- Associate Coordinator of one of the groups of investigations for the school vulnerability
of the Provincia of Potenza (Contract between the Provincia of Potenza and the University
of Basilicata – Dipartimento di Strutture, Geotecnica, Geologia applicata all’ingegneria
(2003).
- Reviewer for the following international scientific journals:
ACI Structural Journal (American Concrete Institute)
Engineering Structures (Elsevier)
Publications: more than 30 papers, 25% in English, have been presented in
international congresses and workshops and published on specialized scientific and
technical international and national journals.

Activities as consultant for public institutions
- Associate coordinator and tutor for the evaluation of seismic vulnerability in the
Provincia of Matera, during the project for the evaluation of seismic vulnerability of
public-strategical buildings of Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria e
Sicilia (2000, CNR-GNDT – Italian Department of Civil Protection).
- Associate coordinator and tutor for the evaluation of seismic vulnerability in the
Provincia of Potenza for the evaluation of the Vulnerability of school buildings (2003-
2004).
