Paul Manning was born in 1952 in Adelaide, South Australia where he had most of his formative education. He undertook a BSc(Hons) at Flinders University (1970-74) and then his PhD in the laboratory of Peter Reeves at the University of Adelaide from 1974-77. This was followed by a post-doc with Mark Achtman at the Max-Planck Institut fuer Molekulare Genetik in Berlin from 1977-80. Here he also collaborated with Kenneth Timmis and his laboratory.
Paul returned to the University of Adelaide in 1980 as a Queen Elizabeth II Fellow and set up his own research group. He was appointed to the academic staff in 1982.
During his time in Adelaide he also had collaboration and sabbaticals with Thomas Meyer at the Max-Planck Institut fuer Biologie in Tuebingen and Kenneth Timmis at the Institut fuer Biotechnologische Forschung in Braunschweig in Germany.
In 1998, Paul joined AstraZeneca Infection Discovery in Waltham Massachusetts as Head of Molecular Sciences until 2007.
