Hard tissue engineering research is focused mainly in two areas, osteo and dental clinical applications. There is a lot of exciting research being performed worldwide in developing novel scaffolds for tissue engineering. Although, nowadays the majority of the research effort is in the development of scaffolds for non-load bearing applications, primarily using soft natural or synthetic polymers or natural scaffolds for soft tissue engineering; metallic scaffolds aimed for hard tissue engineering have been also the subject of in vitro and in vivo research and industrial development. In this article, descriptions of the different manufacturing technologies available to fabricate metallic scaffolds and a compilation of the reported biocompatibility of the currently developed metallic scaffolds have been performed. Finally, we highlight the positive aspects and the remaining problems that will drive future research in metallic constructs aimed for the reconstruction and repair of bone.","note":"","tags":"Metallic bone scaffolds, Biocompatible metals, Load-bearing porous structures, 3-D metallic constructs, Bone tissue engineering."} , {userid:"kelly-alvarez", "refid":"10","repocollections":"","attachment":"","_thumb":"","articletype":"inproceedings","sectionheading":"","title":"Lotus-type Porous Ni-free Stainless Steel Biomaterial Produced by Continuous Zone Melting Technique","year":"2008","author":"K. Ni-free stainless steel is defined here as a steel with a nickel content of at most\u30000.3 wt.%\u3000Ni, which also meets the medically indicated requirements for the absence of nickel. In this paper, an overview of the characterization results relevant to potential medical applications of this Lotus-type porous Ni-free stainless steel is given. Measured material properties include magnetic properties, compressive yield strength, Young\u2019s modulus and pitting corrosion resistance in several environments. Biological tests were performed in order to elucidate if the fabricated material effectively could be used as a biomaterial. In vitro osteoblasts cell spreading and proliferation assays were done. Additionally, in vivo test was performed to evaluate bone tissue response to Lotus-type porous Ni-free austenitic stainless steel using Sprague-Dawley rats for 12 weeks of implantation time. No apparent adverse reactions were noted on or around the implanted material. On the contrary, bone ingrowth with significantly direct bone-contacts was found inside the porous spaces.","note":"","tags":""} , {userid:"SEP", "refid":1261,"repocollections":"","attachment":"","_thumb":"","articletype":"article","sectionheading":"","title":"Current Overview of Cyclic Steam Injection Process","year":"2013","author":" Johannes Alvarez, Sungyun Han","journal":"Journal of Petroleum Science Research (JPSR)","volume":"2","number":"3","pages":"116-127","month":"7","doi":"","pubmed":"","pdflink":"http:\/\/www.jpsr.org\/Download.aspx?ID=5755","urllink":"http:\/\/www.jpsr.org\/paperInfo.aspx?ID=5755","abstract":"Cyclic Steam Injection (CSI) is an effective thermal recovery process, in which, several driving mechanisms define the success of the process; i.e. viscosity reduction, wettability alteration, gas expansion, etc. This process was first applied in late 1950s. Then, it has been applied world-wide successfully to both light and heavy oil reservoirs. To increase the effectiveness of CSI, process was varied by chemical addition to steam, application of horizontal wells and introduction of hydraulic fracturing. With these modern technologies, average 15% of recovery factor of conventional CSI producers back in 1980\u2019s boosted up to approximately 40%. The method is attractive because it gives quick payout at relatively high success rate due to cumulative field development experiences. However, this is still uncompetitive in terms of ultimate recovery factor compared to that of other steam drive methods such as steam flooding (50-60% OOIP) or SAGD (60-70% OOIP). Recent studies related to the CSI have focused on either the optimization of chemical additives and fracture design or questioning on geomechanical solutions to poroelastic effects. In addition, most papers discuss about follow-up process posterior to CSI such as in-situ combustion, CO2 injection and steam flooding. This study is oriented to overview of the past and current status of CSI process in technical aspects with discussion of commercial cases throughout the world. A summarized review is given on the potential importance of encouragement of further investigation of Cyclic Steam Injection.","note":"","tags":"Cyclic Steam Injection; Cyclic Steam Stimulation; Huff n\u2019 Puff; Thermal Enhanced Oil Recovery ","weight":1261} , {userid:"j.a.alvarez-fernandez", "refid":"1","repocollections":"","attachment":"","_thumb":"","articletype":"article","sectionheading":"","title":"Transcranial Doppler and Transcranial Duplex are not exclusive but complementary.","year":"2008","author":"J A Alvarez-Fern\u00e1ndez","journal":"Med Intensiva","volume":"32 (9)","number":"","pages":"315","month":"Aug\/Sep","doi":"","pubmed":"18601840","pdflink":"http:\/\/www.elsevier.es\/watermark\/ctl_servlet?_f=10&pident_articulo=13124341&pident_usuario=0&pcontactid=&pident_revista=64&fichero=64v32n06a13124341pdf001.pdf&ty=91&accion=L&origen=elsevier&web=www.elsevier.es&lan=es","urllink":"","abstract":"","note":"","tags":""} , {userid:"j.a.alvarez-fernandez", "refid":"6","attachment":"","articletype":"article","sectionheading":"","title":"Training in disasters for medical specialists","year":"2007","author":"JA Alvarez-Fern\u00e1ndez","journal":"Med Clin (Barc)","volume":"128","number":"1","pages":"34-5; author reply 35","month":"Jan","doi":"","pubmed":"17266891","pdflink":"","urllink":"","abstract":"","note":"","tags":"Disaster Planning,Education, Medical,Humans,Relief Work,Spain,Specialties, Medical"} , {userid:"j.a.alvarez-fernandez", "refid":"13","attachment":"","articletype":"article","sectionheading":"","title":"Poor trends in cardiac arrest mortality in Spain","year":"2003","author":"J A Alvarez Fern\u00e1ndez","journal":"Rev Clin Esp","volume":"203","number":"11","pages":"513-516","month":"Nov","doi":"","pubmed":"14599389","pdflink":"http:\/\/www.elsevier.es\/watermark\/ctl_servlet?_f=10&pident_articulo=13052581&pident_usuario=0&pcontactid=&pident_revista=65&fichero=65v203n11a13052581pdf001.pdf&ty=151&accion=L&origen=elsevier&web=www.elsevier.es&lan=es","urllink":"","abstract":"","note":"","tags":"Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation,Heart Arrest,Humans,Spain,Ventricular Fibrillation"} , {userid:"j.a.alvarez-fernandez", "refid":"14","attachment":"","articletype":"article","sectionheading":"","title":"Survival after cardiac arrest","year":"2002","author":"J A Alvarez Fern\u00e1ndez","journal":"Rev Clin Esp","volume":"202","number":"12","pages":"658-664","month":"Dec","doi":"","pubmed":"12459096","pdflink":"http:\/\/www.elsevier.es\/watermark\/ctl_servlet?_f=10&pident_articulo=13040518&pident_usuario=0&pcontactid=&pident_revista=65&fichero=65v202n12a13040518pdf001.pdf&ty=58&accion=L&origen=elsevier&web=www.elsevier.es&lan=es","urllink":"","abstract":"","note":"","tags":"Biomedical Research,Heart Arrest,Humans,Prognosis,Survival Rate"} , {userid:"j.a.alvarez-fernandez", "refid":"15","attachment":"","_thumb":"","articletype":"article","sectionheading":"","title":"Health care response in disasters.
