One hundred years after the discovery of the causative spirochaetal agent, little is understood about Leptospira spp. pathogenesis, which in turn has hampered the development of new intervention strategies to address this neglected disease. However, the recent availability of complete genome sequences for Leptospira spp. and the discovery of genetic tools for their transformation have led to important insights into the biology of these pathogens and their pathogenesis. We discuss the life cycle of the bacterium, the recent advances in our understanding and the implications for the future prevention of leptospirosis.","address":"","school":"","issn":"1740-1534","doi":"10.1038\/nrmicro2208","isi":"","pubmed":"19756012","key":"Ko2009","howpublished":"","urllink":"","refid":28,"weight":28} , {userid:"albert-balaguer", "articletype":"article","pages":"","author":"Joaquin Escribano, Albert Balaguer, Filomena Pagone, Albert Feliu, Marta Roqu\u00e9 I Figuls","year":"2009","title":"Pharmacological interventions for preventing complications in idiopathic hypercalciuria.","month":"01","journal":"Cochrane Database Syst Rev","publisher":"","volume":"","number":"1","note":"","tags":"Adult,Diuretics,Drinking,Humans,Hypercalciuria,Kidney Calculi,Randomized Controlled Trials as Topic,Thiazides,Water","booktitle":"","editor":"","abstract":"Idiopathic hypercalciuria is an inherited metabolic abnormality characterised by excessive amounts of calcium excreted into the urine in patients with normal serum levels of calcium. Morbidity associated with idiopathic hypercalciuria is chiefly related to kidney stone disease and bone demineralisation leading to osteopenia and osteoporosis. Idiopathic hypercalciuria contributes to kidney stone disease at all life stages; people with the condition are prone to developing oxalate and calcium phosphate kidney stones. In some cases, crystallised calcium can be deposited in the renal interstitium, causing increased calcium levels in the kidneys. In children, idiopathic hypercalciuria can cause a range of comorbidities including recurrent macroscopic or microscopic haematuria, frequency dysuria syndrome, urinary tract infections and abdominal and lumbar pain. Various dietary interventions have been described that aim to decrease urinary calcium levels or urinary crystallisation.","address":"","school":"","issn":"1469-493X","doi":"10.1002\/14651858.CD006022.pub4","isi":"","pubmed":"24519664","key":"Escribano2014","howpublished":"","urllink":"","refid":"53","weight":"53"} , {userid:"matt.robson", "refid":"28","repocollections":"","attachment":"","_thumb":"","articletype":"incollection","sectionheading":"","title":"2. Using time series derived from high-quality laboratory-based surveillance from 2000-2012, we evaluated whether climatic factors, including El Ni\u00f1o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and meteorological conditions allow for the prediction of leptospirosis outbreaks in New Caledonia. We found that La Ni\u00f1a periods are associated with high rainfall, and both of these factors were in turn, temporally associated with outbreaks of leptospirosis. The sea surface temperature in El Ni\u00f1o Box 4 allowed forecasting of leptospirosis outbreaks four months into the future, a time lag allowing public health authorities to increase preparedness. To our knowledge, our observations in New Caledonia are the first demonstration that ENSO has a strong association with leptospirosis. This association should be tested in other regions in the South Pacific, Asia or Latin America where ENSO may drive climate variability and the risk for leptospirosis outbreaks.","note":"","tags":"Adolescent,Adult,Aged,Aged, 80 and over,Child,Child, Preschool,Disease Outbreaks,El Nino-Southern Oscillation,Female,Humans,Infant,Leptospirosis,Male,Middle Aged,New Caledonia,Young Adult","weight":10,"publisher":"","booktitle":"","editor":"","address":"","school":"","issn":"1935-2735","isi":"","key":"Weinberger2014","howpublished":""} , {userid:"cyrille-goarant", "refid":"104","repocollections":"","attachment":"","_thumb":"","articletype":"article","sectionheading":"","title":"Corrigendum: Escape of TLR5 recognition by spp.: A rationale for atypical endoflagella.","year":"2022","author":"Marion Holzapfel, Delphine Bonhomme, Julie Cagliero, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Vernel-Pauillac, Martine Fanton d'Andon, Sophia Bortolussi, Laurence Fiette, Cyrille Goarant, Elsio A Wunder, Mathieu Picardeau, Albert I Ko, Dirk Werling, Mariko Matsui, Ivo G Boneca, Catherine Werts","journal":"Frontiers in immunology","volume":"13","number":"","pages":"","month":"11","doi":"10.3389\/fimmu.2022.932151","pubmed":"36439189","pdflink":"","urllink":"","abstract":"[This corrects the article DOI: 10.3389\/fimmu.2020.02007.].","note":"","tags":"","weight":104,"publisher":"","booktitle":"","editor":"","address":"","school":"","issn":"1664-3224","isi":"","key":"Holzapfel2022","howpublished":""} ] } ; ajaxResultsLoaded(_ajax_res);
