Several literature have reported on automatic speaker recognition system. This article overviewed speaker recognition systems with emphasis on those using Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). Subsequently, via a statistical based speaker-modeling technique that represents the underlying characteristic sounds of a person's voice an analysis of the speech of speakers from Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo tribes in Nigeria was performed. Speaker recognizers that are capable of recognizing a speaker that is text-independent was designed. The wavelet toolbox of MATLAB® 2007 was used. Performance of the systems is evaluated for a wide range of speech quality; from clean speech to cell-phone speech, by using YOHO standard speech corpora. An Error Rate (ERR) of false acceptance rate of 0.51% and a false rejection rate of 0.65% at a 0.1% false-acceptance rate were obtained. ERR of compensation channel of 0.96%. Same experiment in identification section was also conducted, consequently 0.28% identification error rate was achieved. Using 4.45% of the speaker utterance 0.7% identification error rate was achieve.
, {userid:"i.malami
article
571-582
Aliyu Muhammad, Sanusi Bello Mada, Ibrahim Malami, Gilead E Forcados, Ochuko L Erukainure, Hadiza Sani, Ibrahim Babangida Abubakar
2018
Postmenopausal osteoporosis and breast cancer: The biochemical links and beneficial effects of functional foods.
Breast cancer as a multifactorial disease has been classified among the major causes of morbidity and mortality in women across the world, with a higher prevalence among post-menopausal women. Osteoporosis, a condition characterized by altered bone mineralization is also commonly found among post-menopausal women. Consequently, post-menopausal women are at risk of morbidity and mortality associated with breast cancer and postmenopausal osteoporosis. This may not be unconnected to the fact that, there may be existent biochemical links between the two mayhems, which might rally round between the cellular and molecular connectivity based on the actions and inactions of RANKL, estrogen, free radicals-induced oxidative stress and metabolic implications of age related obesity among others. Cells and tissues including breast and bone are more prone to oxidative stress with age, and oxidative stress could alter the activity of key proteins and pathways required for protection against breast cancer and osteoporosis. As a result, the potentials of antioxidant rich functional foods in preventing, managing and possibly treating breast cancer and postmenopausal osteoporosis cannot be overemphasised. This review mainly uses ISI, SCOPUS and PubMed indexed journals and books containing various experimental reports vacillating from humans, animals and in vitro studies in relation to breast cancer and postmenopausal osteoporosis, biochemical links and possible beneficial effects of functional foods. One distinct feature of the review is that it categorically intends to provide a critical appraisal on the said available experimental data within the variables of breast cancer and osteoporosis among females vis-à-vis the potentials of functional foods.
, {userid:"ehimario.igumbor
Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in four states of Nigeria in October 2020: a population-based household survey
2022
Audu RA, Stafford KA, Steinhardt L, Musa ZA, Iriemenam N, Ilori E, Blanco N, Mitchell A, Hamada Y, Moloney M, Iwara E, Abimiku A, Ige FA, Nwachukwu WE, Igumbor E, Ochu C, Omoare AA, Okunoye O, Greby SM, Rangaka M, Copas A, Dalhatu I, Abubakar I, McCracken S, Alagi M, Mba N, Ahumibe A, Okoi C, Ezechi OC, Salako BL, Ihekweazu C,
, {userid:"ehimario.igumbor
article

Rosemary A Audu, Kristen A Stafford, Laura Steinhardt, Zaidat A Musa, Nnaemeka Iriemenam, Elsie Ilori, Natalia Blanco, Andrew Mitchell, Yohhei Hamada, Mirna Moloney, Emem Iwara, Alash'le Abimiku, Fehintola A Ige, Nwachukwu E William, Ehimario Igumbor, Chinwe Ochu, Adesuyi A Omoare, Olumide Okunoye, Stacie M Greby, Molebogeng X Rangaka, Andrew Copas, Ibrahim Dalhatu, Ibrahim Abubakar, Stephen McCracken, Matthias Alagi, Nwando Mba, Ahumibe Anthony, McPaul Okoye, Catherine Okoi, Oliver C Ezechi, Babatunde L Salako, Chikwe Ihekweazu,
2022
Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in four states of Nigeria in October 2020: A population-based household survey.
The observed epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in sub-Saharan Africa has varied greatly from that in Europe and the United States, with much lower reported incidence. Population-based studies are needed to estimate true cumulative incidence of SARS-CoV-2 to inform public health interventions. This study estimated SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in four selected states in Nigeria in October 2020. We implemented a two-stage cluster sample household survey in four Nigerian states (Enugu, Gombe, Lagos, and Nasarawa) to estimate age-stratified prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. All individuals in sampled households were eligible for interview, blood draw, and nasal/oropharyngeal swab collection. We additionally tested participants for current/recent malaria infection. Seroprevalence estimates were calculated accounting for the complex survey design. Across all four states, 10,629 (96·5%) of 11,015 interviewed individuals provided blood samples. The seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was 25·2% (95% CI 21·8-28·6) in Enugu State, 9·3% (95% CI 7·0-11·5) in Gombe State, 23·3% (95% CI 20·5-26·4) in Lagos State, and 18·0% (95% CI 14·4-21·6) in Nasarawa State. Prevalence of current/recent malaria infection ranged from 2·8% in Lagos to 45·8% in Gombe and was not significantly related to SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence. The prevalence of active SARS-CoV-2 infection in the four states during the survey period was 0·2% (95% CI 0·1-0·4). Approximately eight months after the first reported COVID-19 case in Nigeria, seroprevalence indicated infection levels 194 times higher than the 24,198 officially reported COVID-19 cases across the four states; however, most of the population remained susceptible to COVID-19 in October 2020.
, {userid:"francois.nosten
article
e368-e375
Russell Fung, Jose Villar, Ali Dashti, Leila Cheikh Ismail, Eleonora Staines-Urias, Eric O Ohuma, Laurent J Salomon, Cesar G Victora, Fernando C Barros, Ann Lambert, Maria Carvalho, Yasmin A Jaffer, J Alison Noble, Michael G Gravett, Manorama Purwar, Ruyan Pang, Enrico Bertino, Shama Munim, Aung Myat Min, Rose McGready, Shane A Norris, Zulfiqar A Bhutta, Stephen H Kennedy, Aris T Papageorghiou, Abbas Ourmazd, S Norris, S E Abbott, A Abubakar, J Acedo, I Ahmed, F Al-Aamri, J Al-Abduwani, J Al-Abri, D Alam, E Albernaz, H Algren, F Al-Habsi, M Alija, H Al-Jabri, H Al-Lawatiya, B Al-Rashidiya, D G Altman, W K Al-Zadjali, H F Andersen, L Aranzeta, S Ash, M Baricco, F C Barros, H Barsosio, C Batiuk, M Batra, J Berkley, E Bertino, M K Bhan, B A Bhat, Z A Bhutta, I Blakey, S Bornemeier, A Bradman, M Buckle, O Burnham, F Burton, A Capp, V I Cararra, R Carew, V I Carrara, A A Carter, M Carvalho, P Chamberlain, Ismail L Cheikh, L Cheikh Ismail, A Choudhary, S Choudhary, W C Chumlea, C Condon, L A Corra, C Cosgrove, R Craik, M F da Silveira, D Danelon, T de Wet, E de Leon, S Deshmukh, G Deutsch, J Dhami, Nicola P Di, M Dighe, H Dolk, M Domingues, D Dongaonkar, D Enquobahrie, B Eskenazi, F Farhi, M Fernandes, D Finkton, S Fonseca, I O Frederick, M Frigerio, P Gaglioti, C Garza, G Gilli, P Gilli, M Giolito, F Giuliani, J Golding, M G Gravett, S H Gu, Y Guman, Y P He, L Hoch, S Hussein, D Ibanez, C Ioannou, N Jacinta, N Jackson, Y A Jaffer, S Jaiswal, J M Jimenez-Bustos, F R Juangco, L Juodvirsiene, M Katz, B Kemp, S Kennedy, M Ketkar, V Khedikar, M Kihara, J Kilonzo, C Kisiang'ani, J Kizidio, C L Knight, H E Knight, N Kunnawar, A Laister, A Lambert, A Langer, T Lephoto, A Leston, T Lewis, H Liu, S Lloyd, P Lumbiganon, S Macauley, E Maggiora, C Mahorkar, M Mainwaring, L Malgas, A Matijasevich, K McCormick, R McGready, R Miller, A Min, A Mitidieri, V Mkrtychyan, B Monyepote, D Mota, I Mulik, S Munim, D Muninzwa, N Musee, S Mwakio, H Mwangudzah, R Napolitano, C R Newton, V Ngami, J A Noble, T Norris, F Nosten, K Oas, M Oberto, L Occhi, R Ochieng, E O Ohuma, E Olearo, I Olivera, M G Owende, C Pace, Y Pan, R Y Pang, A T Papageorghiou, B Patel, V Paul, W Paulsene, F Puglia, M Purwar, V Rajan, A Raza, D Reade, J Rivera, D A Rocco, F Roseman, S Roseman, C Rossi, P M Rothwell, I Rovelli, K Saboo, R Salam, M Salim, L Salomon, Luna M Sanchez, J Sande, I Sarris, S Savini, I K Sclowitz, A Seale, J Shah, M Sharps, C Shembekar, Y J Shen, M Shorten, F Signorile, A Singh, S Sohoni, A Somani, T K Sorensen, A Soria- Frisch, E Staines Urias, A Stein, W Stones, V Taori, K Tayade, T Todros, R Uauy, A Varalda, M Venkataraman, C Victora, J Villar, S Vinayak, S Waller, L Walusuna, J H Wang, L Wang, S Wanyonyi, D Weatherall, S Wiladphaingern, A Wilkinson, D Wilson, M H Wu, Q Q Wu, K Wulff, D Yellappan, Y Yuan, S Zaidi, G Zainab, J J Zhang, Y Zhang
2020
Achieving accurate estimates of fetal gestational age and personalised predictions of fetal growth based on data from an international prospective cohort study : a population-based machine learning study
BackgroundPreterm birth is a major global health challenge, the leading cause of death in children under 5 years of age, and a key measure of a population's general health and nutritional status.
