Rose has been based at the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (a Thailand based unit and part of the Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit) at the Thai Myanmar border for more than 29 years, heading the Maternal and Child Health Department and holding the post of Professor Tropical Maternal and Child Health (Oxford University) since 2014, after graduating MB BS from the University of Sydney, Australia. Rose is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) since 2008. Her daily work and research has concentrated on the 1st 1,000 days of life with prospective longitudinal follow up from early pregnancy to the age of two years to fully understand the adverse consequences of malaria and antimalarials on this vulnerable stage of life. With more than 80,000 pregnant women registered to SMRU antenatal clinics, a reversal of childbirth from home to the clinics with skilled birth attendants, SMRU MCH team has built up significant experience of the problems for mothers and infants in rural, remote and resource poor settings. Significant reductions in maternal and neonatal mortality have been achieved by SMRU however they remain unacceptably high and a target for future work.
